Take the Exam on a Computer

Take the CHT Exam at a location and time that is convenient for you! 

California Dialysis Council has contracted with PSI Services LLC (PSI) to deliver the Certified Hemodialysis Technician examination at any of their California computer testing sites.

Read the following rules and procedures prior to paying to take the exam at a computer testing site

1. The computer exam fee is $225. You must first register and pay the fee with California Dialysis Council.

       **Please disregard any dates listed in the exam registration form; you will be able to select your test date at a later time​​​​​​​

2. Once you have been approved by CDC, you will receive an email confirmation from PSI.  You are responsible for contacting PSI to schedule the examination.  Your eligibility is valid for one (1) examination attempt and the exam must be taken within 90 days of receiving the email confirmation.  If you do not take your exam within 90 days, you will forfeit your $225 payment and must pay the fee again in order to schedule your exam.

 

Internet Scheduling

You may schedule your exam with PSI after paying the $225 fee on the CDC website.  Upon payment, you will receive an email confirmation with your CDC ID number, which you will need for scheduling the exam appointment.

 

For the fastest and most convenient test scheduling process, PSI recommends that candidates schedule their exams using the Internet.  Candidates register online by accessing PSI’s registration website at www.psiexams.com.  Internet registration is available 24 hours a day. In order to register by Internet, complete the steps below:

 

1. Log onto PSI’s website, select Certification/Professional Associations and then select the link associated with the CA Dialysis Council examination (you must have your CDC ID# available from your confirmation).  Complete the associated registration form online and submit your information to PSI via the Internet.

 

2. Upon completion of the online registration form, you will be given the available exam dates and locations for scheduling your examination. Select your desired testing date and location.

Telephone Scheduling

You may schedule your exam with PSI after paying the $225 fee on the CDC website.  Upon payment, you will receive an email confirmation with your CDC ID number, which you will need for scheduling the exam appointment.

To schedule an examination, please call (800) 733-9267 (you must have your CDC ID# available).  The times of operation for live operators are Monday - Friday 5:00am - 5:00pm Pacific and Saturday 6:00am - 2:30pm Pacific.

Cancelling an Examination Appointment

You may cancel and reschedule an examination appointment without forfeiting your fee if your cancellation notice is received 2 days before the scheduled examination by 4pm Pacific Time. Examination fees are nontransferable. Cancellation or rescheduling must go through PSI, NOT the California Dialysis Council.

Missed Appointment or Late Cancellation

Your registration will be invalid, you will not be able to take the examination as scheduled, and you will forfiet your $225 exam fee, if you:

 

  • Do not cancel your appointment 2 days before the schedule examination date;
  • Do not appear for your examination appointment;
  • Arrive after examination start time;
  • Do not present proper identification when you arrive for the examination.

Special Examination Arrangements

All examination centers are equipped to provide access in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990, and every reasonable accommodation will be made in meeting a candidate’s needs.  Applicants with disabilities must get pre-approved by California Dialysis Council.

  • Please request an application from [email protected] before registering for the exam.
  • The application will be reviewed and if approved, PSI will contact you to schedule your exam to ensure the accomodations are followed.
  • Do not schedule your exam before submitting the accomodations application. 

Reporting to the Examination Site

On the day of the examination, you should arrive 30 minutes before your appointment.  This extra time is for sign-in, identification, and familiarizing you with the examination process.  If you arrive late, you will not be admitted to the examination site and you will forfeit your examination fee of $225.

Required Identification

Candidates need to provide one (1) valid form of identification.

Candidates must register for the exam with their LEGAL first and last name as it appears on their government issued identification. All required identification below must match the first and last name under which the candidate is registered.

PRIMARY IDENTIFICATION – Choose One

State issued driver’s license (an expired license is not a valid form of identification)
State issued identification card
US Government Issued Passport
US Government Issued Military Identification Card
US Government Issued Alien Registration Card

Failure to provide the required identification at the time of the examination without notifying PSI is considered a missed appointment and you will not be able to take the examination at that time and you will forfiet your exam fee of $225. 

 

Examination Results

A pass/fail score report will be given at the end of exam.  If you pass, an online certificate will be available to print on the CDC website within five business days.

Security Procedures

The following items are not permitted in the examination room:

  • All personal electronic devices except those that are a medical necessity.
  • Children, guests, cellular telephones, personal digital assistants (PDAs), recording devices, cameras, pagers, purses, notebooks, notebook computers, reference or reading material, music players, radios, electronic games, calculators, or briefcases.
  • Personal items including watches, backpacks, pens, pencils, or other writing devices, food, drinks and good-luck items. 
  • Hats, baseball caps, or visors (with the exception of religious apparel), coats, shawls, hooded clothing, heavy jackets or overcoats.

The following security procedures will apply during the examination:

  • NO conversing or any other form of communication among candidates is permitted once you enter the examination area.
  • No smoking, eating, or drinking will be allowed at the examination site.
  • You may not exit the building during the examination.

All Exam Applicants Must Comply with This Statement of Understanding

By submitting my application via online registration and payment, I understand that California’s state certification process depends upon successful passage of this exam or any of the CMS approved national certification examinations. Also, the completion of the specified requirements as set forth by the California Business and Professions Code section 1247. I further understand that the information accrued in this process may be used for statistical purposes and for evaluation by the State’s certification program. I further understand that the information from my records shall be held in confidence and shall not be used for any other purpose without my permission; however, after passing the examination the CDC reserves the right to publish my name and exam date on the CDC website. To the best of my knowledge, the information contained in this online application is true, complete, correct, and is made in good faith. I understand that the California Dialysis Council reserves the right to verify any or all information on this application. I also understand that passing this exam ALONE does NOT result in state certification.

The California Dialysis Council is not responsible for the software provided by PSI at their onsite testing centers.  In the event there is an Act of God or an unforseen technological issue that keeps you from taking the test on your scheduled date and time, you will need to reschedule your exam with PSI.

The occurrence of any of the following actions will result in the denial, suspension, or revocation of the passing status:
   o Falsification of the CDC Examination application
   o Falsification of any materials or information requested by the CDC Examination office
   o Cheating on the CDC examination
